To test the air at home, measure continuously for one to two weeks rather than once. Place a professional monitor in the rooms you use most, at breathing height and away from windows, AC outlets and sunlight. Track PM2.5, PM10, CO₂, TVOC, formaldehyde, temperature and humidity, then compare the results with Dubai Municipality guideline values.
Can I test indoor air quality myself?
You can get a useful first impression with a good consumer monitor, especially for CO₂, humidity and particles. The limits are accuracy, the number of rooms you can cover, and interpretation. A professional assessment uses calibrated monitors in several rooms at once, adds an HVAC inspection and explains the causes behind the numbers.
What should a home air test measure?
At minimum: PM2.5 and PM10 (dust and fine particles), CO₂ (fresh air), TVOC and formaldehyde (chemicals from furniture, paint and cleaning), temperature and relative humidity (comfort and mould risk). These match the main parameters in Dubai Municipality’s guideline and its indoor air quality index.
How long should you monitor?
At least one week, ideally two. Air at home changes with cooking, cleaning, guests, sleeping with the door shut and air-conditioning cycles. A single reading misses all of that. Two weeks captures weekdays and weekends and shows patterns, such as CO₂ building up overnight in a bedroom.
Where should the sensor go?
In the rooms where you spend the most time, usually bedrooms and the living room, at breathing height. Dubai Municipality’s sampling method places the probe 100–200 cm above the floor (clause 9-8-7, p35). Keep monitors away from windows, AC supply outlets, kitchens and direct sunlight, which distort readings.
What readings are good?
| Reading | Good (EIAQI) | Dubai Municipality limit |
|---|---|---|
| PM2.5 | 0–12 µg/m³ | 35 µg/m³ (24 h) |
| PM10 | 0–50 µg/m³ | 150 µg/m³ (24 h) |
| CO₂ | 400–600 ppm | 800 ppm (8 h) |
| VOCs | 0–0.3 mg/m³ | 0.6 mg/m³ (8 h) |
| Humidity | 40–60% (comfortable) | 20–60% |
Readings in the Good band most of the time are a healthy home. Regular peaks above the Dubai Municipality values point to a cause worth fixing.
When do you need a lab test for mould or bacteria?
When you see or smell mould, have water damage, or have symptoms that ease when you leave home. Sensors measure gases and particles; they do not identify mould species. A mould investigation adds a visual inspection, moisture readings and, where needed, air or surface samples analysed by a laboratory.
How much does a professional test cost?
It depends on the number of rooms, how long you monitor and whether laboratory sampling is needed. Ask for a fixed quote that lists the parameters, the number of monitors, the duration and what the report includes.
Frequently asked questions
Is one day of testing enough?
Rarely. Air quality varies with daily routines and AC cycles; one to two weeks shows the real pattern.
What is the most common home air problem in the UAE?
High humidity in coastal villas, followed by fine dust after sandstorms and VOCs from new furniture and cleaning products.
Do air purifiers lower CO₂?
No. Purifiers remove particles; CO₂ needs more fresh air.
